Grape Varietal: 100% Pinot Noir
Growing Region: Gisborne, New Zealand
Owner / Director: Kirsten Searle

A great number of exciting wines have been produced over the past few years at Matawhero Winery. With Kirsten leading the charge with alternative aromatic varietal likes Grüner Veltliner, Albariño, Arneis and Chenin Blanc all winning awards - and this 2017 Gisborne Pinot Rosé being no different. But another achievement to be celebrated and toasted a few times this year, is the 50th Anniversary of when Bill Irwin established the winery in 1968.

Grape Varietals: 63% Pinot Noir’s & 37% Chardonnay
Growing Region: Crus across Champagne, France
Chef de Cave*: Cyril Brun

In 2006 the growing conditions across France and in Champagne were challenging to say the least. But it is during these extremes that gives chef-de-cave Régis Camus the opportunity, when the vines respond as they did in 2006, the ingredients to craft something special. I was in France during that testing vintage and in 2016 was invited to Reims to taste this Vintage Rosé with the newly appointed chef-de-cave Cyril Brun - *(who joined in May 2015).

Grape Varietals: 45% Cinsault, 35% Grenache & 20% Syrah
Growing Region: Coteaux Varois en Provence, France
Chief Winemaker: Jean-Louis Bavay

I have had the pleasure to be involved with Château Routas for more than decade. The location and setting of Château Routas is simply spectacular, situated at the heart of the Coteaux Varois en Provence. Or halfway from the French Riviera on the Mediterranean coast and the foothills of the Alps. The Varois area is recognised as a serious wine region, thanks to the efforts of quality focused wineries like Château Routas.

With the recent visit of my good friend Benoit Collard - (Global Executive Director of Piper Heidsieck) to Auckland - New Zealand. We showcased and paired with some stunning local seasonal cuisine a number of quality Champagnes from the House of Piper Heidsieck. But one that we didn’t get to share with guests at a recent degustation was this unique creation - the recently released ‘Vintage’ 2008.
